Pearl Harbor is an important event in American history. This traumatic event occurred on December 7th , 1941 when Japanese planes bombed Pearl Harbor, a naval base located near Honolulu, Hawaii. Not only were there more than two thousand human causalities, but the damage that was done to the battleships and airplanes was just as horrific. Of course, our first response was retaliation. Our president at the time, Franklin D. Roosevelt, declared war on Japan on December 8th, 1941. Congress approved the declaration with only one vote of hesitation. The alliance between the Japanese and the Germans was known as the Axis powers.

Until Pearl Harbor, the United States had remained disinterested in Europe’s affairs. They had proclaimed neutrality for a solid two years until it was too problematic to be ignored any longer. Japan responded within three days to the United State’s declaration of war. The result of this attack was the internment of all of individuals of Japanese descent. They were interned even if they were born in America. This day is important to our nation, for it showed how during wartime, we can make decisions that at the time are good, but have negative effects for all those involved. In result of the attack at Pearl Harbor, we now understand how the internment of individuals during war leads to quick decisions by the country. War and politics do not mesh. Therefore, Pearl Harbor is noted as a tragic day in American history. The United States has since apologized for their hasty actions. This day marked the day neutrality was over, and the country’s needs were put first.
